Can i help loving my valley schwag? No, I can't. This month with a videoegg t-shirt (i get the men's dudes), some cool stickers, a zoom photo book maker that was way too complicated for this schwagart so I gave the photo paper to jenna to make stickers out of, a topix.net pen--ooorange--and a pin or two. Note to vendors: pins need to go bye bye. I'll take pens and t-shirts and stickers and paper--useable stuff--all day long over buttons and pins that are so small they take the dexterity and eyesight of a, well, 20-something to use. Pins are like, so over.

ALLIED by Jeneane Sessum, 12:10 AM.I just got back from NEBCamp and I am exhilarated and exhausted at the same time.
I met so many great people, late night television characters mostly but so what--video casting is really just TV++--and learned so many new things.. At NEBCamp because the action goes on late into the evening, no one can keep an eye open. Who could sleep with so much thinking and conversation and innovation, all taking place in one location with the best and the brightest in attendance? The inhaling and the exhaling and the input from from the tubing to the receptacle to the mask was one (won) word wide, as in WWW. That word? INCREDIBLE.Â
The best part of NEB is the feeling of peace. You're among family there. It is safe to be who you are. For example, At NEBCamp I roomed with Jenna and couldn't believe I was actually. sleeping. through. that. coughing. It wasn't a problem that she couldn't get out of bed--At NEB you get your tentside meals and take them where you want.
What was great was when the developers actually showed off the CRUMBY, which sucks the crumbs from Lunchables off the $90 Linens-n-Things comforter while simultaneously searching Google for Bird Flu updates--and I got to use it. Totally. Geeked.
At NEB camp I also got a chance to sing the mucus from my lungs during jam sessions, suck the aluminum off methylprednisolone pills, and explore my Burningbird tote bag to see if maybe there was one valium left in the bottom.
The people at NEB are folks, good folks. I know you may envy my time off-blog these last few days while at NEB. But you also should understand that just because NEB is RX only, it's NOT exclusive. O.Really folks should have the right to to hand out prescriptions to those of their choosing without having to face the wrath of the mob for exercising that right.
And if you want an alternative that isn't RX-only, you can go to ROOTCANALCamp. At ROOTCANAL, things move faster, and deeper. If you want Drill Down and Open Sores, go to ROOTCamp. No prescription is needed. Just a referral from your HMO.
In the mean time, if you want to be a team player and maybe get invited to NEB next year, check out my pix on Flickr to see what's in store for you--and I mean it's. one. big. good. time.

Saw a headline on Dvorak Uncensored about the top search terms in Wikipedia being - gasp - related to sex. That's not a surprise, although it's neat that Stan Lee also makes the top 10.
The surprise is that anyone would be surprised. Wikipedia is one attempt to organize the collective knowledge of humanity. Last I checked, sex had something to do with humanity. And we seem to have an insatiable desire to learn more about it -- it's as if we're all making sure that we haven't missed something, especially something "obvious" that we "should" know already.
For all that I see that technology has an enormous impact on relationships and sexuality (hence my book title, The Sexual Revolution 2.0), I also know that sex is sex.
We're always going to be fascinated with ourselves in this regard.
I have intended for quite some time now to add "sex-tech" as at least a stub, if not a full entry. If I do that, the phrase will officially exist, thanks to the phenomenon of Wikiality. (Copyeditors: Should I drop the hyphen now and skip the phase?) In fact, it wouldn't hurt to add "sexual revolution 2.0" either ... oh dear, now here I go ...

The Jason Calacanis Weblog, 6:10 PM.Site Mail comes to Netscape (or "on the 'death'of IM and MySpace page view goosing"). A very large percentage of MySpace traffic comes from the fact that they have site mail. Many young people I talk to don't use IM any more, they use the slow and ugly version: MySpace site mail. It's crazy because doing IM on a web page is slow, requiring multiple page loads. However, there is an advantage to it: you don't need to add anyone to your IM client and you don't need to download a client.
Anyway, the people have spoken and a large percentage of them love site-based mail/IM.
We've added it to the top-level of Netscape today (we've been testing it a couple of layers down since the start).
If you go to a story page (permalink page) you will see "Send Message" next to people's names now (see images below). We have this for both the person who submitted the story and for the people who are commenting.
Also, instead of taking you to another page it pops open a nice little AJAX box so we don't waste your time. We could have made this take 3-4 pages like MySpace does, but we decided to give up the page views in exchange for the user experience. I hate the fact that MySpace makes you load 3-4 pages to get to your mail--it's so obvious that they are goosing the page views. This is always a bad idea, because those folks click through the pages super fact and never look--let alone click--on the advertisements. This makes your advertisers upset because they think your site doesn't perform. It's a horrible design philosophy.

ALLIED by Jeneane Sessum, 3:35 PM.The Attention Deficit Economy.
{Note: CROSS POSTED TO BLOGHER.}
The most annoying marketing buzzword of the week is âAttention.â Not a new theory, the Attention mantra has been regaining traction among blogworld marketers who propose control of Attention as the Brand New Promise for Internet citizens and the New Brand Promise for the businesses that serve them.
The payoff for paying attention to what Internet travelers pay attention to is apparently twofold: 1) paying attention to what consumers are paying attention to and why makes businesses smarter (i.e., more money now), and 2) holding customersâ attention long enough to fully engage them stitches a hyperlink directly from the businessâs URL to the knotty little skull of the consumer, making him a Customer For Life (i.e. more money in the future).
God truly is good, is he not?
My stepfather once worked as a Managing Director at the same firm where I was Director of Corporate Communications. The CEO ran a brainstorming session (corporate dysfunction signal number one) one morning on rejiggering our mission statement. My stepfather came up with: âTo make more money now and in the future.â
The management team rejected that one, but I rather liked it.
Although this attention thing sounds a little good and a little creepy at the same time, it is essentially as it always has always been: anyone concerned with what youâre paying attention to is out to make money off of you. Trying to paint attention monitoring or tracking or trust or what have you as anything other than that is dishonest. You and I are not that important. No one, I mean no one, besides a suspicious mate cares what you pay attention to online unless theyâre looking to detach some bread from your wallet.
And whatâs wrong with that is not admitting it is the truth, but rather, painting it as new movement, an alternative, a new way.
If I appear skeptical itâs because Iâm on steroids and Iâm over 40. These things happen.
Attention and Gestures, which are now inextricably linked, got a dose of Heroin recently when AOL did the dastardly deed of releasing guzumpteenthousand individualsâ search records in such a way that it wasnât hard to tell that Granny has a penchant for strap-ons.
Mary Hoder explains it this way: âThe AOL data which lumped each user's searches together with a user ID over three months, making profiling and finding them easy, meant that AOL provided enough data in some cases to indicate a lot about who the data related to very specifically. Leading to judgments by the rest of us. About the people who do or think things on the edges of society.â
Iâm with Mary up to the very end, where she says: âAbout the people who do or think things on the edges of society.â Because I donât think that we can tell where the edges are from search results. My data does not define me. My search is not my gesturing 60 percent of the time--maybe more. I donât think that search = attention. Sometimes search = anti-attention more often than not. Especially as Internet users become more at home online and start to rearrange the furniture.
Lots of times, what we seek is not what we are looking for, and where we end up is really not where we cared to go. Hyperlink does not always equal intention. Again, the accidental, the speed and simplicity of discovery, is what makes the Internet NOT like real life.
But more on âattentionâ and âgesturesâ and âsearchâ and âdataâ and why I think so much of this stuff is New Age Internetism designed to make giving away your money feel better. As I said, attention is not intention. While I may assume that the person who paid attention to my blog for the fleeting seconds it took to get there today by searching Google for âGreat Dane Doberman Mixâ was looking to buy one or to fuck one.
Two very different customers. Two very different attention fulfillment requirements. And many, many, many opportunities for savvy marketers to sell you consulting services around the variations therein.
Queue Seinfeld: Not that thereâs anything wrong with that.
Unless your expectations are around context and intention, around making meaning, not making purchases.
Methylprednisolone tablets USP 4mg, Day 2, 20mg.
Glorious ADD.
The Internet is where we are free to dissociate. You cannot put a value on my lack of attention.
I will say here, in closing, that what I think I am getting at is that the Internet most important distinction is its exquisite function to enable distraction, not to track attention. That the accidental come-upon-ness of the obscure and viscerally meaningful can evoke mere milliseconds of joy or horror individually which has relevant commercial value to precisely nothing.
THAT is whatâs important. And that your Snakes on a Plane is my e.âs ghosts.
No formula for the value of obscurity and accidents, rather increasing disproportionately in fits and starts.
It takes getting to know me. ME. YOU.
The most meaningful online relationship with one sometimes come from the unknowing of someone else, and in the unknowing of one, discovering the other.
What matters is often not the gesturing, but in the de-gesturing; it is not attention then, but repulsion. It becomes too convoluted to calculate, which way my attention flows, because it is neither linear nor accountable, except for total on the invoices of some mighty consultants.
More and more, my gestures reflect not what I am paying attention to, but instead are sideways related to what Iâve dropped my illusions about. In surrender of control, then, not in clinging to it, we wander here. We value most those instances of delight so fleeting that they are the opposite of thought and reason; they are out of time; they scatter us to the wind rather than draw us in.
They repel us outward, until we are untraceable, exiled, free, and only in knowing me severed will I tell you how you can find me whole.

And upon announcing the end of his reign as the King of Blogdom..... In the days of graying beard and weakened knuckles, King David the Winer, ruler of all Blogdom, bequeathed his rights and privileges and power to the Princes of the Palace, Sir Michael and Sir Robert. In secret conversation, the two Princes were schooled in the methods and means of maintaining the gentle balance that yielded plenty for the rulers of the land.
The mission of the Princes, from that day onward, was to emulate the great King in his absence, both in word and in deed, and to practice the artful dodgery which had made the King legend among his people. "As I have made you, make me proud," the bearded one decreed to the Princes in Waiting as he counted down his final days of rule over the land of Blogdom.
"Yes, Your Highnass," Sirs Michael and Robert said, heads bowed, each kissing the King's knotted fingers. And they promised to tell all who protected the kingdom the powerful tactics of war, both in speech and in conduct, passed down from the great King David the Winer. They attended great gatherings where princes and knights and leaders from other kingdoms came together to confer on urgent matters. There, they signed treaties to preserve the order of things. And, when these great gatherings dispersed, word spread from one kingdom to the next on strategies of protection in the manner of King David the Winer.
"Attack lest ye be attacked," was the lesson of the King, "And use whatever weapons you have."
With the Good News in hand and in heart, Knights from many lands rode home to lay with their maidens and sip wine straight from the pap. The ladies licked secrets from the lips of their lovers of the great gatherings in the land of plenty, in the Kingdom of Blogdom, under the rule of King David and the Princes of the Palace, Sirs Robert and Michael.

Kidnapped Journalists Speak Out After Two Week Ordeal. Fox News correspondent Steve Centanni and cameraman Olaf Wiig were freed Sunday, ending a two-week long hostage drama. Scripting News, 12:10 PM.Steve Gillmor: Beam me up, Sergey.
I've seen a few blog posts asking why would you want to post from a Blackberry? After all, you could carry a laptop with you, and of course typing on a laptop keyboard is much easier than typing on a PDA keyboard (it is, no argument there). And maybe it's a good idea to take a break from blog posting sometimes, maybe it's a good thing that you can't post from every conceivable place.
Rather than quickly respond in a comment, I want to respond here, where I can create a list and add to it over time.
1. I think it's important to flip the question around, because when you do it helps reveal the why of it. Is email the only form of communication that makes sense when using a Blackberry? Well, maybe for some people, but for others, who may have to communicate with a workgroup, or their family, or create an RSS feed for their observations away from work or home, using weblog software makes a lot of sense, not to exclusion of email, but in addition to it.
2. Okay, great, but you can use email to post to a weblog, why not just do that? Well, I tried it. In 2001, I programmed Radio 8, which shipped in early 2002, to receive blog posts via email. The problem with that is that unlike email, I like to edit my blog posts, make spelling corrections, add items to a list, reorganize, prioritize, etc. When you're using email to post to a blog, it's a lot like email (surprise!) -- your first version is your last. Again, email is useful, I send emails all the time, but blogging is useful too.
3. To the point that a laptop can go with you everywhere a Blackberry can, that's obviously not true. I have my Blackberry with me when I'm in line at the supermarket, I almost never have a laptop with me then. But that doesn't mean I don't get ideas while standing in line. A few other places Blackberries go that laptops don't: ski lifts, restaurants, cabs, buses and yes, bathrooms. (Someone had to say that, glad it's out of the way.) Jackie Danicki writes that she blogged "from the Vatican during New Year's Eve Mass, with the Pope a few feet in front of me." You could also blog during a disaster like a hurricane or after an earthquake.
4. Bonus point. People have even said they tried reading news on a Blackberry and it was too cumbersome. That's why we have to bang the drum so loudly and even then a few days later people didn't get the message: With a simple change in the way news is presented, it works. It's not a technical breakthrough, it's a usability improvement, but it makes a big difference. Try it out before you dismiss it, and don't try it on a desktop or laptop, try it on a PDA. Here's the New York Times in this format, and the BBC.
The Jason Calacanis Weblog, 11:10 AM.On my interview policy.... I've moved to email only interviews (with rare exceptions where I know the journalist and really trust them), and it's worked out really great for me. Here is an interview with Greg (who I trust), that I did on the subject of email interviews.
I love Mark's quote: "I don't ever cede anything... you either know I have a blog when you interview me, or you are a dumbass. If you ask me not to report our exchange on my blog, which has been done, then I decide if I want that protection or not."
Mark is spot on: how do you interview a blogger and not know and read their blog?! Hello?!

Sex Drive Daily, 10:10 AM.Renderotica must restrict content, seek new credit card processor.
Renderotica, an erotic art exchange full of sci-fi and fantasy images, has had to change its terms of service to accomodate a credit card processor that has become squeamish about serving an adult business. From the email sent out last night:
Our credit card processor has recently made policy changes, and they will no longer allow us to display the following anywhere on the site:
-- Pornography depicting an individual being killed - "Snuff"
-- Pornography depicting nonconsensual sex - this includes bondage as well as individuals appearing to be drugged, asleep, hypnotized, raped, etc.
-- Pornography depicting sadistic or masochistic abuse
-- Pornography depicting urination, defecation, or menstruation
As you already know, we have prohibited the display of any pedophilia (child sex) and bestiality (animal sex) on our site since its inception.
Who draws the line, here? Not the government, but the credit card processor? I won't miss the images from some of these categories, but others are alarmingly broad and reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of BDSM. And erotic fiction, for that matter.
I personally have no interest in snuff or potty, but find nothing at all objectionable about menstruation. And to lump bondage in with nonconsensual sex? Excuse me? Or banning images of hynotism at a sci-fi/fantasy erotica site? And who makes the call about whether an S&M scene is "abuse"? (Yes, I can tell from the wording that the credit card company makes the call, and the answer is "all of it.")
One of the stills I like most over at Pornotopia NSFW, another sci-fi/fantasy erotic site, is of a woman having sex with a dragon NSFW. Does that count as "bestiality"? Or perhaps we are to assume that this dragon is of at least human intelligence and is telepathically linked to her, making it a person of a different species rather than dismissable as a mere animal?
The email says that Renderotica is seeking a new provider but in the mean time, all images meeting the above criteria have been hidden (although not deleted), and members are asked to report others that violate the new terms. Alas, even switching providers might not restore the ToS to what it was:
If our new service provider allows less restrictive access, we will restore access to these images at that time. We will not know the new rules until we have completed the change to a new service provider.
At Renderotica, we firmly believe in the right of every adult to communicate on any subject that is not restricted by the law. However, credit card service providers are free to make other choices and we must abide by those choices if we are to stay in business.
NBC Criticized For 'Plane Crash' Emmy Opening. NBC's decision to go ahead with a realistic, white-knuckle plane crash segment--a parody of Lost--to begin its Emmy awards telecast Sunday night drew flak for airing the same day as the plane crash in Lexington, Ky., that killed 49 people.
